The Lord of the Land

I have the most amazing recuperative powers, don’t I, Warner?” Seth asked me one day while we were enjoying a fire and a snifter of brandy in the library. The Old Man had a very fine cellar. He bared and lifted his arm. “You’d never know how badly burned this was, would you?”

I would because I’d wrapped it and bathed it in essence for the three weeks he was unconscious and the week when he was awake and grateful. I was less successful with the wound from the poison thorn, which had healed but left his neck and shoulder resembling the result of a botched beheading.

However, I said none of this. “How is your research coming? Have you yet found a way back to the earthly realm?”

He shook his head. “I have found quite a few rare volumes about our kind, of which I’d only heard rumours, but nothing helpful. You’re certain you have nothing in your bag of tricks?”

“No, I’m afraid not.” I remembered what Eddy had told me about “the vibe,” but I was loathe to disclose to Seth that since the Old Man was dead we might not be able to get back. “You have tried the spell which brought us here?”

“Yes, of course. It must be a one-way ride.”

His constant complaining about the darkness was becoming bothersome. Even more bothersome was the disappearance of the voice, which I had not heard since our battle with the Old Man. Maddeningly, however, I could feel its presence. I was not alone in my head, but that portion of it was silent.

Seth got up and paced in front of the fire. “There has to be a way back. How did he buy these most excellent vintages? But this library does not contain a single volume about magic. Surely someone as powerful as he would have a few magical volumes lying around instead of all this history and philosophy. Are you certain this is the only room with books?”

“You are as ambulatory as I. We have been in all the rooms there are and taken inventory. Shall I count them for you? The ground floor has the kitchen, the library, the dining hall—”

“Yes, yes, I know.” Suddenly, he stopped pacing and fixed me with a hopeful look. “The compass!” he said, more animated than I had seen him in some time. “Do you still have it?”

“Of course.”

“Well, fetch it,” he said. “I think some experimentation is called for.”

I snapped the Emerson I was reading shut, wondering when I’d been pressed into involuntary servitude, and left the library without a word. Seth was becoming more irritating with each passing day. He was haughty, imperious, demanding…I stopped with one foot on the stone staircase and took a deep breath, closing my eyes to collect my thoughts.

Considering how much I had to gain by losing him, I would be wise to use all my resources to help him find his way back. If I occasionally had to suffer some indignity, well that was that.
